Dehradun, 21 Jul: A five-day “One Day as a Scientist” week celebration under the ‘Jigyasa’ programme to be held from 21 to 25 July commenced here, today, at the CSIR-Indian Institute of Petroleum.
Prime Minister and President, CSIR, Narendra Modi, in his 119th Mann Ki Baat on 23 February 2025, had suggested that students “spend a day as a scientist” and experience what it feels like to be one. Similar activities are ongoing in all CSIR laboratories.
CSIR-IIP is actively participating in this programme and encouraging the students from the Uttarakhand region to have Jigyasa towards Science and to become creative in the subject. Under this 5-day programme, approximately 500 students from Classes 8 to 10 from different schools (Government & Private) will have a real feeling of ongoing research activities and also directly interact with scientists at the CSIR-IIP.
Dr Aarti, coordinator, CSIR-IIP Jigyasa 2.0, and Dr Kamal Kumar Maurya, co-coordinator, welcomed and motivated the students for science and latest technology development at the CSIR and CSIR-IIP.
During this programme, Dr Umesh Kumar, Satyam Prajapati, Dr Racha Surya Murli, Dr Shubham Paul, Dr VCS Palla, Dr Ankur Bordoloi, Dr T Senthil Kumar, Scientists, CSIR-IIP, will deliver talks and interact with students. The students will get knowledge about different processes and technologies related to energy and alternative fuels. During their talks, they informed students that the body’s major constituents are chemicals. Daily items like clothes, medicines, detergents, soaps, polymers, fuels, and petroleum, etc., are also made up of chemical compounds. Every innovation in technology involves introductory chemistry. So, students should think and view everything from a new angle.
Students will also get to know about the types of crude oils, their origin, refining, testing, and application as well. The students were also shown how the analysis of petroleum products using sophisticated techniques like FT-IR, HR-GC-MS, XRD, TGA, etc., is a tool to understand the findings in chemical and petroleum science for advanced needs. The participation of students in research laboratories of the institute, viz., the Room Temperature Bio-Diesel pilot plant, Advanced Crude Oil research centre, and the Glass Blowing Laboratory, is also being organised.
Dr Aarti (Jigyasa coordinator), Dr Kamal Kumar, Dr Umesh Kumar, Dr Raghuvir Singh, Dr Pradeep Kumar Tyagi, Dr Jyoti Porwal, Gokul Prasad, Sanjay Kumar Maurya, Ajay Pal, Pradeep Pundir, and Sapna Penuliare put in exemplary efforts to make the programme a success.
