HNB Garhwal University’s 11th Convocation celebrates “Empowered Women, Prosperous Nation”

Srinagar, 8 Nov: The Hemvati Nandan Bahuguna Garhwal University (HNBGU) hosted its 11th Convocation with the theme “Empowered Women, Prosperous Nation”. This event conferred 1,239 degrees, including 59 gold medals, with 1,182 postgraduate degrees and 98 PhD degrees on the University’s scholars.

President of India Droupadi Murmu, who serves as the Visitor of the University, was present on the occasion. In her convocation address, President Murmu emphasised the pivotal role of empowered women in building a prosperous nation. She noted, “Thirty female graduates received gold medals, highlighting the theme’s significance. The achievements of these young women are a testament to the untapped potential of our female citizens. When women are empowered, our nation prospers.” Congratulating the graduates President Murmu advised three things to emulate.

She said, “Never forget your roots, never compromise with ethical values, fairness and honesty, and, lastly, do not forget that society has made a great contribution to our academic journey so it’s our responsibility to work for those who have been left behind in the developmental journey.”

President Murmu also lauded the university’s important initiatives to tackle environmental issues in the region. She added, “I feel happy to know that the university is conducting several courses and research programmes which are crucial to addressing local issues.”

Present were the University Chancellor, Dr Yogendra Narayan, Governor Lt General Gurmit Singh (Retd), Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, legislators Vinod Kandari and Rajkumar Pori.

Governor Singh recognised HNBGU’s role in promoting education and research. He paid tribute to the late Hemvati Nandan Bahuguna, former Chief Minister of Uttarakhand, whose efforts led to HNBGU’s establishment. Governor Singh lauded Bahuguna’s dedication to the welfare of Garhwal’s people and his unwavering commitment to education. Congratulating graduates, Governor stressed that HNBGU was not just an academic institution but the result of a historic movement by the people of Garhwal.

Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, congratulated the graduates and shared insights on maintaining a stress-free life. Dhami highlighted the convocation’s theme of empowered women and a prosperous nation, underscoring the President’s exemplary role. He encouraged graduates to take inspiration from her and contribute to the nation’s growth.

Chief Minister Dhami noted the significant achievement of the convocation: “It’s a proud moment for all of us to witness that out of the total gold medallists today, 30 are women. This not only reflects the commitment and capabilities of our women but also signifies progress toward gender equality.”

The convocation began with Vice-Chancellor Prof Annapurna Nautiyal warmly welcoming President Murmu and other dignitaries. Prof Nautiyal spoke of the university’s 50-year journey. She stated, “Established in 1973 and elevated to Central University status in 2009, the institution has 49 departments spanning three campuses and 11 faculties, serving 12,581 students with a diverse and inclusive community of 6,492 female and 6,089 male students.”

Highlighting the university’s significant research contributions in scientific, social, economic, environmental, and cultural fields, Prof Nautiyal added, “Faculty members have published 644 research papers, 191 book chapters, and 39 books. The university’s faculty holds four patents, with collaborative research projects underway.”

Prof Annpurna Nautiyal described the implementation of the New Education Policy 2020 and the development of new study programs to enhance education and skill development. She also mentioned the establishment of the Dr Ambedkar Centre of Excellence for Scheduled Castes and Other Backward Class students, providing competitive exam coaching and teacher training.

The 11th Convocation of HNB Garhwal University celebrated academic excellence and the vision of empowering women for a brighter, more prosperous future. Distinguished guests, including Pro Vice-Chancellor of HNBGU Prof RC Bhatt, Registrar Dr Dhiraj Kumar, Finance Officer Prof NS Panwar, Members of the Executive Council and Academic Council, Deans, and Heads of Departments, added prestige to the occasion. Convenor of the 11th convocation organising committee along with other committee members were also present.

The presence of faculty members and enthusiastic students, dedicated to academic excellence and knowledge, painted a promising future for the university. The theme of “Empowered Women and Prosperous Nation” resonates with the university’s commitment to inclusivity, diversity, and women’s empowerment. It underscores the pivotal role of education in creating a more equitable and prosperous society.
