Mussoorie, 26 Jul: Incessant torrential rain is increasingly posing a threat to residential areas in Mussoorie. Following heavy rainfall in the Husainganj area, a section of the main road collapsed, putting two houses at risk. The incident has sparked panic in the locality, with residents fearing a potential major disaster. Reports state that the road collapse caused a large volume of debris to slide onto Devendra Singh Bharti’s house. The debris entered the home, damaging household belongings. Meanwhile, the retaining wall of the road near Murari Lal’s house has also been damaged. Locals warn that, if the rains continue, the houses could face serious danger.
According to local residents, the Husainganj area has long been grappling with the problem of landslides. Continuous rain is weakening the hillside and retaining structures, thereby escalating the risk to residential homes. Residents state that they have repeatedly demanded permanent safety measures from the administration, yet no concrete solution has been implemented so far.
Upon learning of the incident, local Councillor Pawan Thalwal arrived at the scene to assess the situation. He immediately informed the administration, demanding relief for the affected families and a technical inspection of the area. Following the notification, an administrative team arrived at the site and began assessing the damage. Officials have assured the affected families of all possible assistance. Additionally, the area is being inspected to determine the next course of action.
Incidents of landslides and road collapses are being reported frequently from various parts of Mussoorie during this rainy season. In light of this, locals have demanded that, rather than limiting efforts to mere relief operations, a scientific survey of vulnerable areas be conducted, robust protective embankments be constructed, and the drainage system be improved, so that people do not have to face such dangers every monsoon.
