School of Law Narsee Monjee, Chandigarh Campus wins Moot Court Competition

Dehradun, 23 Feb: The final contest of the 9th Law College Dehradun Moot Court Competition based on the Constitution of India was held between School of Law Narsee Monjee, Chandigarh Campus and Vivekanand Institute of Professional Studies, Indraprastha University, New Delhi, at the Law College Dehradun, Uttaranchal University, today. Former Judge of Allahabad High Court Justice Mehboob Ali was the Chief Guest and presiding judge on this occasion.

The Executive Director of the University, Dr Abhishek Joshi was present as a special guest. Supreme Court Advocate-on-Record Ankur Yadav, Advocate and Founder of Independent Thought Dr Vikram Srivastava, Partner of Rab & Rab Associates and Advocate of Nainital High Court Dr Aman Rab and Law College Dehradun Dean Prof Rajesh Bahuguna were in the role of judges. The issues to be considered before the Constitutional Bench of five judges were – Validity of Bulldozer Justice, Provisions of Anti-Defection Law, Powers of the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly and Interpretation of illegal and terrorist activities.

The Winner was School of Law Narsee Monjee, Chandigarh Campus, while the Runner-up was Vivekanand Institute of Professional Studies, Indraprastha University, New Delhi.

The Best Woman Advocate was Bhavika, Dr BR Ambedkar National Law University, Lucknow; and the Best Male Advocate was Dharampal Kumar, Government Law College, Mumbai. The award for Best Memorial went to Symbiosis Law School, Pune, and Best Researcher to Shreya Mishra, Lloyd Law College, Noida, UP.

Prof Rajesh Bahuguna said that 23 courts were established for this competition while a total of 51 dignitaries were invited as judges. A close competition was seen in the final match. The participants pleading on behalf of the government, citing illegal and terrorist activities, termed every action of the government including Bulldozer Justice as legal. The participants pleading for the petitioners called the bulldozer action the cruellest action in the world and presented numerous precedents and demanded it to be declared unconstitutional.

Justice Mehboob Ali in his address said that this competition organised by the Law College Dehradun is an example of national level moot court. The level of the participants and their presentation reminded of a real court. He said that moot court is an art in which proficiency paves the way for advocacy for the students. While teaching the tricks of courtship, he said that a successful advocate should be full of reasoning skills on one hand and on the other hand he should also have dedication towards the legal profession. He said that an advocate should be ready for both success and failure. Failure always teaches us success and it needs to be imbibed. Explaining the importance of polite behaviour of advocates, he said that politeness adds to the merit of the case.

The programme was also addressed by the judges of the final match, Ankur Yadav, Dr Vikram Srivastava and Dr Aman Rab. The vote of thanks was proposed by the Principal of the College, Prof Poonam Rawat.

Executive Director Dr Abhishek Joshi, Dr Poonam Rawat, Dr Radhey Shyam Jha, Dr Anjum Parvez, Dr Ramakant Tripathi, Dr Anil Dixit, Dr Lakshmi Priya and a large number of students were especially present at the programme.
