Seminar on forensic analysis of crimes held in Law College, Uttaranchal University

Dehradun, 7 May: A seminar was organised today at Law College Dehradun of Uttaranchal University on the ‘Role of Forensic Science in Criminal Investigation’.

Dr GK Goswami, Additional Director General of Police, Uttar Pradesh, and Director of Forensic Science Institute, Lucknow, was the Chief Guest and keynote speaker on this occasion. More than 1200 participants from various departments were present at the seminar.

Chancellor of the University Jitendra Joshi welcomed the Chief Guest with a memento and inaugurated the seminar by lighting the lamp with him.

ADG Goswami explained the rationale and importance of forensic science by sharing his police service experiences. He said that the edifice of every dispute is established on the foundation of injustice, while justice is at the core of forensic science. The common person expects a fair hearing from the court, but the reality is that this is not possible without fair investigation. A verdict based only on oral testimony is not a guarantee of justice, while evidence based on forensic science not only adds weight to the main evidence but is also impartial and scientifically tested. He said that forensic science is a powerful weapon which is capable of proving, both, guilt and innocence.

Dean of Law College and Pro Vice-Chancellor of the University, Prof Rajesh Bahuguna said that now the ‘Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023’ has made forensic investigation mandatory in cases of offences having punishment of more than seven years. Due to this, the importance of forensic science has increased and immense possibilities have emerged in this field.

Vice Chancellor Prof Dharam Buddhi proposed the vote of thanks. He also proposed an MoU with the Institute of Forensic Science, which ADG Goswami gladly accepted.

Present on this occasion were Executive Director of the University Dr Abhishek Joshi, Principal Dr Poonam Rawat, Head, Dr Radheshyam Jha, Abhiranjan Dixit, Dr Lakshmi Priya Vinjamuri, Amit Chaudhary, Dr Ramakant Tripathi, Dr Shikha Gairola, Amalendu Mishra, Dr Khaliq Ahmed, Sachin Kumar and a large number of students.
