It has to be a very special city and state to have a culture that allows the practice of independent journalism, free of any influence other than inner motivation. As Garhwal Post enters its 29th year of publication, it must acknowledge that Dehradun and Uttarakhand inspire a large part of its journalistic ethos. In a world that has become addicted to a high stimulus diet of reading and viewing focused on crime, obsessive narcissism, promotion of hate and prejudice, it is rare to have readers and contributors who celebrate ordinary everyday existence, the depth of understanding to appreciate the small successes and achievements of society.

There is a reason why Garhwal Post’s motto is “For Tomorrow’s People”, for it believes not just in reflecting the present but also preparing for the future. Dehradun has traditionally been an educational hub at the school level; and is now rapidly providing quality university education. There are other centres in the state undergoing such evolution. It becomes important, therefore, that a culture be nourished containing the majesty and grace of the hills, based on the traditions of scholarship and transcendental spirituality of ancient times.

Uttarakhand came into being as the challenges of the region were different to other parts of erstwhile UP. The environmental challenge was more immediate and visible. Its people had abilities shaped by their particular circumstances, which could contribute to taking the region forward at a greater pace if unhindered by concerns more distant. Overall, it can be said that Uttarakhand has succeeded as a political and cultural concept to a large extent. Undoubtedly, new challenges have emerged from increasing income levels and an expanding consumerist mindset. These can only be dealt with through introspection and collective action.

Garhwal Post has been a part of this experience and, over the years, voiced the hopes and concerns of the people, perhaps even nudging decision makers into going in the right direction. The positives have been underlined and the achievements highlighted. Uttarakhand’s increased attraction even in its still evolving state emerges in many ways from the greater sophistication of its citizenry, as compared to other places. So, even when we feel unfulfilled in not entirely achieving our foundational goals, those who come in the multitudes for a few days in the mountains still obtain some joy. And, hopefully, on the way if they pick up a copy of the Garhwal Post, they may find a greater understanding of why we are what we are.
