Training on Orchid Farming begins at Graphic Era

Dehradun, 16 Dec: Experts from Graphic Era are training women in orchid production. This training programme began at Graphic Era Deemed University, here, today.
Women from various parts of the state are participating in this 2-day training programme. Vice Chancellor Dr Narpinder Singh addressed the farmers today. He said that preservation of medicinal plants, flowers, fruits and traditional cuisine found in the state can be turned into profitable business. For this, farmers should be trained in various techniques and technologies. Director, IQAS, Dr Santosh S Saraf said that women play an important role in farming. They should be encouraged to get training and start business in orchid farming.
HoD, Department of Biotechnology, Dr Manu Pant said that orchid farming is an excellent source of income as orchid plants are sold for about 800-1500 rupees in the market. Out of 236 species found in Uttarakhand, 17 species are used for medicinal purposes. She provided detailed information about different types of orchids including Aerides multiflora, Rhynchostylis retusa, Cymbidium and Cattleya.
HoD, Management Studies, Dr Navneet Rawat highlighted important aspects of ethical farming.
The training programme is being organized by Department of Biotechnology and Department of Management Studies in collaboration with Agriculture Department’s Uttarakhand Council for Biotechnology. Co-Principal Investigator Kartikey Raina and PhD scholars were also present at the training programme.
