Dehradun, 24 Jan: Tremors were felt in many areas of Uttarakhand including Dehradun this afternoon. It has been revealed that the epicentre of the earthquake was in Nepal. Besides Dehradun, mild tremors were also felt in many areas including Rudraprayag, Chamoli, Haldwani and Bageshwar in Uttarakhand. Mild tremors were felt in Bhatwadi, Maneri and Chinyalisaur areas of Uttarkashi district. There is no information of any damage from anywhere. Earthquake tremors were felt at 2.28 pm this afternoon. As per the reports, tremors were also felt as far as Delhi and the NCR region.
Strong tremors were felt in Dehradun, Rudraprayag and Pauri in Garhwal region and in Champawat, Pantnagar, Bhimtal, Bageshwar, Haldwani, Rudrapur, Paharpani and Nainital in the Kumaon region. People came out of their houses and shops as soon as the earthquake was felt.
Bikram Singh, Director of the Uttarakhand Meteorological Centre, confirmed that the tremors were indeed felt across the state. He said that the intensity of the earthquake was recorded at 5.4 on the Richter scale. It may be recalled that the earthquake tremors were also felt on the India-Nepal border just two days ago on Sunday. An earthquake of magnitude 3.8 on the Richter scale had occurred at 8:58 a.m. on Sunday morning in Talla Johar, Munsiyari and Bangapani tehsils of Pithoragarh district in Indo-Nepal border.
It may be recalled that Uttarakhand is considered to be very sensitive in terms of earthquakes. Most of the area of Uttarakhand comes under seismic zones 4 and 5.
