Action in Bhopalpani Bridge collapse case

By Arun Pratap Singh
Dehradun, 25 Dec: The Government has initiated action in the case of the partial collapse of the Bhopalpani Bridge on the Raipur-Thano Road. In an order issued today by Additional Secretary Vineet Kumar, the government has shifted Executive Engineer of National Highways, Section Roorkee, Jitendra Kumar Tripathi, and Assistant Engineer of the same section Manoj Kumar Rathore and taken them off field duty.

The action has been taken in relation to the recent partial collapse of the Bhopalpani Bridge on Raipur-Thano Road. Both the engineers have been attached to the PWD State Headquarters till further orders. This bridge had been constructed with a cost of Rs 9 crores in the year 2018 and since then has already suffered partial collapse of the structure twice in such a short period.
It remains to be seen if a fair inquiry is conducted into the reasons behind the collapse and action taken against those responsible. Local residents also claim that large scale movement of overloaded trucks carrying illegally mined sand and gravel from the rivers of the area, including the river below this bridge in question could have been responsible for the collapse.
