Dehradun, 29 Apr: Uttarakhand Kranti Dal (UKD) has voiced strong disapproval regarding the ongoing works of the Smart City project and the ‘worsening state’ of the city. Speaking to Garhwal Post, UKD’s Mahanagar President Vijendra Rawat shared that the party has decided to make the people aware of the fact that the Dehradun Municipal Corporation has unlawfully established a garbage dumping zone in the vicinity of Kargi Chowk, in utter disregard of the prescribed norms of urban governance. He stated that the party would stage a strong public protest against the smart city projects and against illegal dumping in Doon on 1 May.
Rawat also asserted that the Smart City scheme had mandated the adoption of advanced technology for the collection and management of waste, with the intention that garbage disposal plants would be constructed on the outskirts of the city. However, contrary to these stipulations, residential dwellings have been erected near the dumping site, resulting in grave health hazards for the local population. He claimed that the local people are now afflicted by serious ailments. The UKD leader claimed that the party has therefore registered its vehement opposition to this egregious system.
Rawat stated that the party has decided that on 1 May, Central General Secretary of the Uttarakhand Kranti Dal and erstwhile candidate for the Dharampur Assembly constituency, Kiran Rawat Kashyap would undertake a one day fast, demanding the immediate closure of the dumping zone. Furthermore, the party has also declared that, in case the authorities fail to heed this demand, a mass agitation would be organised with the active participation of party members and Dehradun residents.
