Dehradun, 22 Aug: A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed today between Uttarakhand Open University, Haldwani, and the Society of Pollution and Environmental Conservation Scientists (SPECS). On behalf of the university, Registrar Professor Sanjay Kumar Khatri signed the agreement, while Dr Brijmohan Sharma signed on behalf of SPECS.

Dr Sharma informed Professor Khatri that SPECS is actively involved in various areas such as environmental science, special needs education, water pollution, e-waste management, and water conservation. Additionally, SPECS has been organising workshops aimed at popularising science communication. The organisation also provides branding training for local products to self-help groups in rural areas to empower women and make them self-reliant.

The primary objective of this MoU with the university is to enhance the scientific knowledge of students pursuing distance education by organising workshops. Furthermore, in the villages adopted by the university, free training will be provided to local residents on how to scientifically produce traditional items, with the aim of making them self-sufficient.

On this occasion, the Vice-Chancellor of the university, Professor Om Prakash Singh Negi, expressed the hope that the partnership between the university and SPECS will contribute to self-employment and skill development in the state. He also highlighted that efforts will be made to develop communication skills through scientific activities for children with special needs and their parents.

Also present at the event were Dr Siddharth Pokhriyal, Assistant Professor, Special Education, Dr Krishna Kumar Tamta, Assistant Professor of Forestry and Environmental Science, and Neeraj Uniyal from SPECS.
