Dehradun, 9 July: Governor Lt-General Gurmit Singh (Retd) and Sainik Welfare Minister Ganesh Joshi presided in the 19th Foundation Day program of UPNL at Garhi Cantt, on Sunday.
During the programme, the Governor honored the students who have excelled in the field of art, literature and education. The Governor and the Sainik Welfare Minister also honored 03 employees of UPNL with prize money for their excellent work. Kalam Singh Bisht, an ex-serviceman who won several medals in the field of mountaineering and cycling, was also honored on the occasion.

In the program, Governor Gurmit Singh extended the heartiest congratulations to all the students and employees who were honored. He said that the main objective of UPNL organization formed for the welfare of the dependents of ex-servicemen is to provide them employment. We all must take a pledge that we should work for its betterment. Ways should be found to ensure that every ex-serviceman and their families gets the benefit of this institution. Innovation and new technology should be used in subpanels.
He said that all the employees are discharging their duties with full devotion and hard work. This service should be continued and the prestige of the institution should be increased. He also appealed to all the employees to take a pledge that they should not promote any kind of wrong work culture which may affect the honor and dignity of the organization.
Lt-General Singh said that ex-servicemen have natural leadership potential. How they should cooperate with the government and administration should be considered. He said that Uttarakhand has unlimited possibilities in the field of tourism, agriculture and wellness. Ex-servicemen should come forward to find new employment opportunities in these areas. Recognizing our strengths, we need to work in that area.
He said that it is a moment of happiness for all of us that the business and turnover of UPNL are increasing continuously. UPNL is at the top position in GST payment in the state, which has been honored by the Central Board of Indirect Taxes by giving a certificate. The Governor expressed happiness over the fact that software has been developed by UPNL through which online registration, timely invoicing of departments and salary remittance are being done.
During this program, the greeting message sent by Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami on the foundation day of UPNL was also read out. He sent greetings and best wishes to all the officers, employees and their families of UPNL on the 19th foundation day.

Minister Joshi said that sub-plan employees are working shoulder to shoulder with the government in every department of Uttarakhand. He said that it is the responsibility of the government to listen to the problems of the employees and solve their problems. Continuous efforts are being made by the government in this direction. At present, UPNL has sponsored 24000 candidates, out of all the corporations operating in the country, UPNL is in second place for sponsorship despite Uttarakhand being a small state, which is a matter of great pride. He said that about Rs. 56 lakhs has been spent on the welfare schemes of ex-servicemen and their dependents under the CSR head to date. Recently, UPNL donated Rs 11 lakh to the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund to deal with the Joshimath disaster.
The minister praised the work done by UPNL for the welfare of ex-servicemen and their dependents and expressed hope that UPNL would continue to work with the same capacity, conscientiousness and transparency. He assured all the employees of UPNL that the government has always been taking care of the interests of the employees and efforts will continue in this direction as far as possible. On this occasion, Minister Ganesh Joshi will soon prepare a fund for the talented youth who are preparing for competitive examinations of NDA, IAS and MBBS.
