DEHRADUN, 7 Dec: Former Chief Minister Harish Rawat today held a protest in the form of a ‘Maun Vrata’ in front of the statue of Mahatma Gandhi at Gandhi Park, here.

Rawat is demanding that the state government declare the support price for sugarcane in the interest of sugarcane farmers. During the protest, a significant number of farmers were also present at the dharna site along with other senior Congress leaders.

Speaking to media persons on this occasion, Harish Rawat stated that, at a time when when billionaires like Gautam Adani and Mukesh Ambani are coming to Dehradun for the Investors’ Summit, Congress would like to raise the voice of farmers and take up their issues with the government. He also claimed that the farmers of Uttarakhand are in a miserable condition.

Rawat added that the support price of sugarcane has not been declared, while the compensation given to the farmers, so far, is very less. The farmers have not been paid their dues by the Iqbalpur Sugar Mill, so far. On the one side, there will be the glorification of the billionaires reaching Dehradun for the summit tomorrow and, on the other hand, the Congress will take up the issues of the farmers so that their plight becomes known to all.
