Haridwar, 24 Apr: A major accident occurred in Kangri village under Shyampur police station area of Haridwar district this morning when a 55-year-old labourer Manohar fell into a borewell pit during drilling work. Reports suggest that Manohar, who had taken a contract for boring, was fixing pipes inside the nearly 27-foot-deep pit when loose soil collapsed, causing him to fall and get trapped under the debris.
The incident occurred around 10:30 am while a hand pump was being installed at a construction site in lane number six of Kangri village. Fellow worker Amit said that the soil caved in suddenly, burying Manohar inside the pit. Panic spread quickly as the villagers rushed to the spot and the family members broke down in distress, waiting anxiously for his rescue.
Police, SDRF and NDRF teams reached the site soon after receiving information and launched a rescue operation. Heavy machinery including JCBs have been deployed to dig alongside the borewell in an attempt to reach the trapped worker. However, the narrow lanes of the colony posed challenges in bringing in larger equipment such as a Poclain machine, which the officials said might be required to expedite the operation.
Inspector Tirpan Singh Rawat of NDRF stated that the borewell was about 20 feet deep and four metres wide, and that Manohar was trapped beneath the soil. Rescue teams have already dug six to seven feet parallel to the borewell and are continuing efforts to reach him as this report was filed this evening. The officials estimate that the operation may take several more hours, possibly until evening.
City CO Shishupal Singh Negi and other senior officers are present at the site overseeing the rescue. Villagers are assisting the administration, and all available resources have been pressed into service to save Manohar. The incident has once again highlighted the dangers of borewell digging and the urgent need for strict safety measures during such operations.
