Dehradun, 23 Jan: Governor Lieutenant General Gurmit Singh (Retd) participated as the Chief Guest on Friday at the sixth convocation ceremony of Sridev Suman Uttarakhand University. At the convocation held at the Pandit Lalit Mohan Sharma Campus, Rishikesh, the Governor conferred degrees upon successful students and awarded gold medals to students securing the highest marks. He also felicitated teachers for their outstanding services. On this occasion, the Governor inaugurated a guest house, Type-5 residential quarters, and a multipurpose building on the campus.

In his address, the Governor said that more joy than the students’ achievements is visible on the faces of their parents and teachers, and that this sight represents one of the greatest successes of society. He expressed happiness that 21,664 students of the university received degrees and are now set to become active participants in the nation-building process. He stated that India’s youth and “Amrit Generation” will play a decisive role in achieving the goal of a developed nation by 2047.

Congratulating the gold medalists, the Governor said that confidence, energy, and leadership qualities are clearly evident in them, and expressed confidence that they will emerge as future leaders. He noted that a gold medal is the result of hard work, discipline, and dedication—an achievement not destined for everyone.

The Governor emphasised that leadership does not merely mean holding a position, but carrying responsibility. He urged students that after earning their degrees, they should not limit themselves to being job seekers, but become job creators, entrepreneurs, and innovators. He advised the youth to stay away from addiction, corruption, and selfishness, and called upon them to dream big and become Karmayogis to realise those dreams.

Appreciating the university’s academic and research achievements, the Governor said that the publication of research papers and the filing of patents reflect a strong research culture. He stated that research and innovation alone will make India a Vishwaguru (global leader), and that patent registration is an important step toward Atmanirbhar Bharat (Self-Reliant India). He also praised alumni engagement and the formation of subject-based student clubs, which contribute to the holistic development of students.

The Governor emphasised the need to integrate India’s ancient civilisation, culture, and knowledge traditions with modern technologies, calling it the greatest opportunity of the 21st century. He appreciated the unity of the university family, stating that “unity in diversity” is India’s greatest strength.

Higher Education Minister Dr Dhan Singh Rawat extended his best wishes to the degree recipients and shared information about innovations being implemented in the higher education sector. Vice-Chancellor Prof NK Joshi presented a detailed report on the university’s achievements and innovations. The event was attended by MLA Premchand Aggarwal, Campus Director Prof MS Rawat, Registrar Dinesh Chandra, vice-chancellors of various universities, distinguished guests, members of the Academic Council and Executive Council, along with a large number of students and their parents.
