Haldwani, 9 Jan: Haldwani police have arrested YouTuber Jyoti Adhikari after a complaint alleged that she hurt religious sentiments and made offensive remarks against women. A case was registered at Mukhani police station against Adhikari on the basis of a complaint filed by local resident Juhi Chuphal. Taking the matter seriously, police registered the case under relevant sections and took Adhikari into custody. Following her arrest, she has been sent to jail on 14-day judicial custody. However, it is learnt that she is likely to move the court to get bail.
The legal troubles for the woman YouTuber intensified after she faced allegations of making objectionable comments about mountain women and insulting religious beliefs. FIR was lodged yesterday in Haldwani after Juhi Chuphal stated in her complaint that, as a resident of Uttarakhand, she holds deep respect for the state’s local culture, gods, and goddesses. She further expressed her reverence and harmony towards the woman power of Uttarakhand. Chuphal mentioned that she became aware through various videos circulating on social media that YouTuber Jyoti Adhikari, wife of Gopal Singh Adhikari and resident of Haripur Lalmani, Kishanpur Ghurdora, Haldwani, Nainital district, was seen brandishing a sickle in a public place while using extremely offensive and foul language.
According to the complaint, Adhikari made derogatory remarks against the women of Kumaon, the culture of Uttarakhand, and its deities. In the video, she allegedly questioned the dignity of mountain women and hurt religious sentiments through her indecent commentary. The complainant alleged that such statements have not only wounded the ancient Hindu traditions and religious feelings of Uttarakhand but have also caused grave insult to the women of the Kumaon region. Based on these allegations, police initially summoned Adhikari for questioning after serving a notice. By late evening, yesterday Mukhani police formally arrested her, produced her before the court, and she was subsequently sent to prison.
Mukhani SHO Sushil Joshi claimed that a case was registered against the Haldwani-based YouTuber following a complaint by a young woman regarding indecent remarks against mountain women and the alleged hurting of religious sentiments. After the interrogation process was completed, Jyoti Adhikari was arrested. The officer confirmed that she has been sent to jail for a 14-day judicial remand. Police have booked Adhikari under sections 27, 192, 196, 299, and 302B of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
