Chamoli, 1 Mar: A Mahindra SUV carrying people returning from a marriage ceremony fell into a deep gorge near Marwari-Thang motorway near Joshimath, late last evening. Two people died on the spot while 10 others were injured. A SDRF team reached the accident spot and rescued the people. The condition of 5 of those injured is stated to be critical.
According to the reports, the accident occurred as the driver lost control over the vehicle. There were 12 people in the SUV and, of them, 2 persons died on the spot. The SDRF team rescued 10 people from a deep ditch and took them to the hospital in time.
According to the information received at Chamoli district headquarters, the accident occurred on Tuesday night around 8.30 p.m. A Mahindra SUV bearing registration number UK11TA 1789 was carrying passengers returning from a wedding ceremony when the driver lost control and the vehicle fell 70 metres down into a gorge.
According to the local administration, the vehicle was returning from the marriage ceremony of Pravesh, son of Anand Singh, which was held in Kandakhola Tok of Thang village. The procession had gone to Kimana village of Urgam Valley on Tuesday morning. Some baraatis were returning in the evening when the accident occurred. Joshimath police station in-charge KC Bhatt informed that as soon as the information about the incident was received, the police and the SDRF team reached the spot.
After starting relief and rescue work, all the injured were admitted to CHC Joshimath by 108, police and SDRF vehicles. There were 12 people in the vehicle. These have been identified as Sangeeta Devi (32) village Bhalagaon, Kamal Singh Negi (43), Monika Devi (28), Bharat Singh (57), Fateh Singh, Prakash (29), Kamli Devi (33) and Bhalgaon resident Sumitra Devi (45), Pushpa Devi (44) and Rajni Devi (27), Rama Devi ( 40) Ravdi Devi (52) Jitendra Rana (31) resident of Chai village. Of these, Sangeeta and Kamal Singh died while being taken to the hospital.
