Dehradun, 30 Mar: Senior journalist Sheeshpal Gusain was among the eminent writers who were honoured today by Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami at a function organised by Bhasha Sanshtan, While highly eminent writers such as Jiten Thakur and poet Buddhinath Mishra received their awards for their long time contribution to the world of Hindi literature, senior journalist Sheeshpal Gusain has been conferred the prestigious Uttarakhand Sahitya Gaurav Samman and honoured with ‘Dr Pitambar Datt Barthwal Award’ for his outstanding contribution to literature. Gusain received a cheque of Rs 1 lakh, the emblem of the Bhasha Sansthan and an angavastra.

Born in 1975 in Kandisaund village of Tehri Garhwal, Gusain has risen to prominence in journalism and has, in the past few years, taken to in-depth research based writing on the state affairs and the cultural and social history of Uttarakhand. He was today awarded for his acclaimed work ‘Madhya Himalaya: Uttarakhand ki Itihasik Mahilaen’ which weaves together the stories of 39 remarkable women whose courage and contributions shaped the region’s identity. From Rani Karnavati and Teelu Rauteli to Gaura Devi and Bachendri Pal, the book captures the indomitable spirit of Uttarakhand’s women across history, politics, administration, art and sport.

Gusain’s literary journey includes four published books, over 300 research articles and more than 1,000 essays in newspapers and journals. His series Doon Katha in Amar Ujala with over 100 pieces reflects his deep engagement with public concerns. Beyond literature, his sensitive storytelling has mobilised public support for families in distress, raising transparent financial aid during crises such as the Tapovan disaster and personal tragedies, proving his writing to be a bridge of compassion.

Gusain continues to share the heritage of the central Himalayas through his video series Vyakhya, bringing forgotten historical sites and archaeological insights to life for new generations also demonstrating how the literature, journalism and modern media can together preserve cultural memory while serving society with empathy and responsibility.
