Dehradun, 7 Apr: Doon Library and Research Centre organised an illustrated lecture on 20 years of Indian Cinema, here, today. Film expert Parth Chatterjee presented a detailed account of Hindi cinema from the 1950s to the early 1970s.

Chatterjee analysed the emotional and sociological evolution of Hindi cinema during this period, highlighting the concerns of the time through the perspectives of directors like Bimal Roy, Guru Dutt, Kamal Amrohi, Kidar Sharma, and Raj Kapoor. He also shed light on the role of women in these works.

The lecture covered Hindi cinema aesthetics, sociological context, concerns, and emotional portrayals, as well as the directors’ perspectives and the role of female actresses. Chatterjee shared insights on notable figures like Nargis, Meena Kumari, Geeta Bali, Nutan, Bina Rai, Vyjayanthimala, Nimmi, and Waheeda Rehman.

The audience was captivated by the illustrated lecture and appreciated it immensely. Chatterjee also highlighted that despite being recognised as leading artists, many actresses were not paid equally to their male counterparts (Dilip Kumar, Raj Kapoor, and Dev Anand or Ashok Kumar, even Bharat Bhushan and Pradeep Kumar).

The event included a Q&A session. Nicholas, programme advisor, welcomed the audience and introduced the topic. The event was attended by Doon Library’s programme officer Chandrashekhar Tewari, Sanjay Shukla, Alan Sealy, Nadir Bilimoria, Prakash Namgia, Dr Manoj Panjani, Arun Asafal, Aparna Vardhan, VK Dobhal, Rajiv Rajdan, Alok Sarin, BS Rawat, Kul Bhushan Nethani, Himanshu Ahuja, Sunder Singh Bisht, Madan Singh, Rakesh Kumar, Vijay Yadav, and others.
