Dehradun, 28 Jul: The Uttarakhand Power Corporation Limited (UPCL) has claimed that smart meters will now serve not only as devices to measure electricity consumption but also as reliable companions for consumer safety and energy saving. In a statement issued today, the UPCL officials have claimed that equipped with new technology, these meters would be able to provide timely alerts in case of earthing leakage in household electrical systems.
According to UPCL, whenever a smart meter detects earthing leakage, a clear signal is displayed on the meter and an instant alert is sent to the registered mobile number of the consumer via SMS. This, the corporation states, enables the consumers to take corrective action in time and avoid possible accidents. The facility is expected to enhance electrical safety by reducing the risk of shocks and other mishaps, prevent fire hazards through early detection of wiring faults, control unnecessary electricity consumption caused by leakage, and allow consumers to arrange prompt inspection and repair by qualified electricians.
UPCL has also claimed that the initiative is part of its broader objective not only to ensure uninterrupted power supply but also to provide safe, aware and technology‑enabled services to consumers. UPCL has also appealed to all the consumers not to ignore earthing leakage signals on smart meters or mobile alerts, urging immediate inspection of wiring and appliances. It stressed that small precautions can prevent wastage of electricity and safeguard families and property.
In its statement, the UPCL has further claimed that the smart meters are a major step towards transparent, secure and simplified electricity management and the Corporation has urged the consumers to adopt the smart meters to save power, enhance safety and move towards a smarter future.
