Midnight Turmoil in Mussoorie

By Sunil Sonker
Mussoorie, 14 May: A late-night dispute between two communities here heated up the atmosphere across the entire city on Wednesday. What began as a minor verbal altercation quickly escalated into a violent clash, resulting in a fierce physical altercation between the two sides. Following the incident, commotion continued throughout the night at the Mussoorie Kotwali (police station), while on Thursday morning, the anger of the Valmiki community and the municipal sanitation workers spilled out onto the streets. The irate crowd staged a vigorous protest in the Jhulaghar area, blocking traffic and demanding the immediate arrest of the accused individuals. Consequently, traffic flow in Mussoorie’s main thoroughfares remained disrupted for an extended period. Long queues of vehicles formed along Mall Road and the surrounding areas. Tourists and locals alike remained stuck in traffic jams for hours, while many were forced to take alternative routes to reach their destinations.

Sitting on the road and chanting slogans, the protesters alleged that no effective action had yet been taken against those who had assaulted the sanitation workers. They warned that, if arrests are not made promptly, their agitation would intensify further.
Rakesh Kumar, representing the aggrieved party, stated that a dispute had broken out late at night at Picture Palace Chowk between sanitation workers and a group of taxi drivers over an unspecified issue. The situation escalated rapidly, leading to physical violence. He alleged that some taxi drivers and their associates behaved abusively toward the sanitation workers, physically assaulted them, and used derogatory language referencing their Scheduled Caste background. The incident has sparked immense outrage within the Valmiki community. They issued a stern warning that their agitation would continue until the accused individuals are arrested.
In protest against the incident, the municipal sanitation workers also staged a temporary work boycott. The employees stated that, for some time now, incidents of misconduct and physical assault against them have been on the rise. They alleged that late at night, under the influence of alcohol, certain youths—often in collusion with taxi drivers—unnecessarily instigate disputes and target municipal employees. The employees also pointed out that a physical assault had recently occurred against staff stationed at the municipal barrier; however, even in that instance, no strict action was taken against the accused. This is the primary reason why a sense of insecurity and resentment is growing among the workforce.
Given the gravity of the situation, Municipal Chairperson Meera Saklani, Executive Officer Gaurav Bhasin, and other officials arrived at the site. While addressing the employees, the Chairperson assured them that the municipal administration stands firmly by their side. She stated unequivocally that if any employee has been subjected to verbal abuse, misconduct, or caste-based slurs, the perpetrators will under no circumstances be spared. The municipal administration has demanded the immediate arrest of the accused and strict punitive action from the police.
Following the incident, a massive commotion continued throughout the night at the Mussoorie Police Station (Kotwali). A large crowd gathered at the station, persistently demanding action against the accused. In view of the prevailing situation, the police were compelled to exercise heightened vigilance. Commenting on the matter, CO Mussoorie Jagdish Chand Pant stated that written complaints have been received from both parties, and cases have been registered against both sides in accordance with legal procedures. He added that the investigation is proceeding based on CCTV footage and other evidence, and the culprits will be arrested shortly. The CO noted that, for some time now, certain unruly elements have been engaging in brawls and creating disturbances late in the evening and at night while under the influence of alcohol. Directives have been issued to identify such individuals and take strict action against them. He issued a stern warning that, if these elements fail to mend their ways, severe punitive measures—including invoking the ‘Gangster Act’ and ordering their expulsion from the district—will be initiated against them.
Councillor Sachin Guher also registered his protest regarding the incident. He staged a sit-in protest for a brief period in the Jhulaghar area, demanding strict action from the administration against the culprits. He asserted that ensuring the safety of municipal employees is the administration’s responsibility and that any physical assault against any employee will not be tolerated.
Locals express concern that the rising frequency of such incidents is tarnishing Mussoorie’s reputation as a peaceful, tourism-centric destination. If the administration fails to take strict measures in a timely manner, the upcoming tourist season could also be adversely affected. Currently, the police are closely monitoring the entire situation, and heightened vigilance is being maintained across the city to prevent the occurrence of any untoward incidents.
