Dehradun, 10 Jun: An international seminar on cinnamon will be organised at the Perfumery and Aromatic Research & Development Institute, at the Centre for Aromatic Plants in Selaqui, Dehradun on 11 and 12 June.

In this regard, Agriculture and Horticulture Minister Ganesh Joshi shared the information while addressing a press conference at the Media Centre in the Secretariat, here, today. Joshi informed media that the two-day symposium on cinnamon will be held under the aegis of the Centre for Aromatic Plants (CAP) Dehradun. On this occasion, Joshi also extended greetings to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on becoming the longest-serving elected Prime Minister of the country.

Addressing the media, Joshi stated that the Centre for Aromatic Plants (CAP) at Selaqui has now been renamed the Perfumery and Aromatic Research and Development Institute, which is a premier institution in the aromatic sector engaged in cultivation, training, processing, quality testing, research and development and commercialisation of aromatic plants. Over the past two decades, the institute has facilitated aromatic farming across nearly 10,000 hectares of land, involving 29,000 farmers in 109 aroma clusters and establishing more than 200 field distillation units. The turnover of the aromatic sector, which was Rs 2 crores in 2003, has now exceeded Rs 100 crores in 2025.

Highlighting the success and acceptance of aromatic farming in the state, Joshi said that the government has implemented the ‘Mahak Kranti Policy 2026’ to expand the sector. Under this policy, about 23,000 hectares of land will be brought under aromatic cultivation benefiting 91,000 farmers, and seven aroma valleys will be developed. In Champawat and Nainital districts, a Cinnamon Valley is being developed over 5,200 hectares, which will create new opportunities for farmers, entrepreneurs and industries.

The Agriculture and Horticulture Minister further announced that the institute will host the international seminar and workshop on “Cinnamon: Propagation, Sustainable Cultivation and Post-Harvest Technological Innovations” on 11 and 12 June. This initiative is aligned with the objectives of the ambitious Uttarakhand Mahak Kranti Policy 2026–36. The seminar aims to promote commercial cinnamon cultivation, acquaint farmers with advanced technologies and global practices, establish coordination among researchers, industry and farmers, encourage quality-based production and value addition, raise awareness on food safety, quality standards and export requirements, and foster entrepreneurship and investment in cinnamon-based enterprises, thereby positioning Uttarakhand as a leading centre for cinnamon production.

The seminar will witness participation from international and national experts on cinnamon, including specialists from Sri Lanka’s National Cinnamon Research and Training Centre, the Director of Pure Cinnamon Exports, and experts from Indonesia’s Research Centre for Estate Crops. In addition, leading Indian institutions, 40 delegations, 50 cinnamon farmers and officials from various departments will take part. Director of CAP, Selaqui, Dr Nripendra Chauhan, was also present at the press briefing.
