Champawat, 11 Jun: In the newly constituted Pati Nagar Panchayat of Champawat district, independent candidate Narayan Lal today emerged victorious in the election for chairperson, defeating BJP candidate Naveen Ram by 164 votes. Narayan Lal, who is the brother‑in‑law of Indian Idol fame singer Pawandeep Rajan, secured 678 votes while Naveen Ram received 514. This was the first election held for the newly formed Nagar Panchayat, which falls under Lohaghat Assembly constituency.
The election witnessed Pawandeep Rajan campaigning in support of Narayan Lal, which drew considerable public attention. Counting began at 8 a.m. and was conducted under tight security arrangements to ensure a peaceful and fair process. Out of 2,067 registered voters, 1,612 exercised their franchise, recording a turnout of 77.99 per cent.
Results of the four wards of Pati Nagar Panchayat were also declared. In New Colony ward, independent candidate Naval Pachouli won with 183 votes. In Joladi ward, independent candidate Bablu Singh secured victory with 151 votes. In Ranichaud ward, independent candidate Shanti Devi won with 166 votes, while in Poonakot ward, independent candidate Sangeeta emerged victorious with 145 votes.
The elections were held on Tuesday in three newly constituted urban local bodies of Uttarakhand, including Pati Nagar Panchayat in Champawat, Garhinegi Nagar Panchayat in Udham Singh Nagar and Narendra Nagar Municipality in Tehri Garhwal. While results of Garhinegi are awaited, BJP’s candidate for chairperson in Narendra Nagar Municipality was elected unopposed. In the ward elections there, BJP won four seats and Congress‑supported candidates secured three.
