Kasauli, 12 Jun: Lieutenant General Anindya Sengupta, General Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Central Command, today flagged off the ‘Surya Green – Himalayan Odyssey’ Electric Vehicle Expedition from Kasauli. A fleet of 10 TATA Electric Vehicles will traverse the border areas and remote locations of Himachal Pradesh and Ladakh over 11 days, covering 1,663 kilometres before culminating at the Hall of Fame, Leh on 22 June.

Organised by the Golden Key Division under the aegis of Surya Command in collaboration with TATA EV, the expedition comprises six TATA Harrier, three TATA Curvv and one TATA Punch electric vehicles. The expedition aims to promote green and clean energy, foster national integration, strengthen military-civil relations and project the valour and dedication of Indian Army soldiers. It also seeks to inspire youth by showcasing adventure, resilience and the spirit of service to the nation.

The expedition is led by Major Aman Singh Yadav of the Golden Key Division and comprises 10 Indian Army personnel, five representatives from TATA EV and two digital content creators. The team brings together operational expertise, automotive technology and public outreach in a structured military-civil collaboration.

The expedition route will traverse through the rugged and awe-inspiring landscapes of Spiti, Lahaul, Hanle, Chushul and Tangtse, negotiating some of the world’s highest motorable roads. Among these, Umling La stands at a breathtaking 19,024 feet – the highest motorable pass in the world – followed by Chang La at 17,590 feet, both demanding extraordinary endurance from man and machine alike.

As part of the journey, the expedition will pay homage at the Rezang La War Memorial, honouring the valour and supreme sacrifice of the soldiers of 13 KUMAON during the Battle of Rezang La in 1962. The team will also engage with local communities, youth and educational institutions across the mountainous region to promote environmental conservation and responsible mobility.

The expedition aligns with the Government of India’s vision of clean mobility and indigenous green technology adoption, while underscoring the Indian Army’s commitment to innovation and the preservation of the fragile Himalayan ecosystem.
