Anniversaries are an occasion for self-appraisal. And, if the numbers have been running up, for reappraisal! The Garhwal Post has entered its twenty-first year as a daily. Earlier, it was a weekly for a decade, creating space in a city and a region where the ‘intelligentsia’-quotient was high and the economy not so much. As our tagline goes – “For Tomorrow’s People” – it was a stage of preparation for the future. As a daily it took a crucial step forward towards functioning as a media platform that needed to hold its own in changing times – preserving the quality of the past and anticipating social, economic, literary and political developments in the coming times.

with the blessings of Chief Guest and legendary
journalist, the late Vinod Mehta. State Information
Minister Dr Indira Hridayesh presided over the function.

As a second generation journalist, who spent time helping out at his father’s printing press and even taking up distribution responsibilities, the path was more or less charted out for me. It became a challenge not just to build on an occupational base but also further my understanding of journalism. Getting the opportunity to study the subject in (then) East Berlin under faculty that was as idealistic as it was talented, I further absorbed the spirit of the profession. I think that remains within me even as technology, the readership, and the market have undergone a huge transformation. It is the special culture of Dehradun and Uttarakhand that defines Garhwal Post’s journalism – this is what has kept us going. The ‘shortcomings’ of a non-corporate entity are more than compensated for by the dedicated subscriber base and world-class contributors. This provides a continuity with the special legacy of the past that future generations must benefit from and preserve. Hopefully, we will do even better in the future by establishing high standards of probity, fairness and human empathy. We wish to stand with not just those in need, but also the deserving.

your project. Thank you Ashok Misra for always pushing
the boat to reach its potential. Beyond thankful for your

(Retd). Always great discussing community progress
and local development and policy decisions, etc., with our leader!
I would also like to place on record my sincere thanks to my core team of Garhwal Post led by my friend and mentor Ashok Prasad Misra, and includes Arun Pratap Singh, Anjali Nauriyal, Sunita Vijay, Alok Joshi, Preeti Rana, Neeraj Sharma, Manohar and my father, veteran journalist Upendra Kumar Sharma.

Post’s e-Paper was
launched by Chief
Minister Pushkar
Singh Dhami.

I would like to share that when I started Garhwal Post weekly in 1996, I visited Ashok Misra’s house and asked him what would be his remuneration. He smiled and replied, “Do you have the money to pay me?” He went on to work one and a half years gratis. My dream is to one day pay him what he deserves!
