Dehradun, 24 Jul: Dr Geeta Khanna, Chairperson of the Uttarakhand State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (SCPCR), on Friday inspected the Model School and the Cross Disability Early Intervention Centre (CDEIC) at the National Institute for the Empowerment of Persons with Visual Disabilities (NIEPVD), Dehradun.
She was accompanied by the Commission’s Secretary, Dr Shiv Kumar Barnwal, Assistant Secretary Dr SK Singh, and Child Psychologist Dr Nishat.
During the visit, Dr Khanna interacted with students of the Model School and their parents to understand their concerns, suggestions, and experiences. She reviewed the educational, medical, rehabilitation, and other support services being provided to the students. She also held discussions with teachers and staff regarding students’ daily activities, therapy sessions, early intervention programmes, and the institution’s inclusive education initiatives.
The Chairperson also inspected the Cross Disability Early Intervention Centre (CDEIC), where she reviewed the early intervention and rehabilitation services being provided to children with special needs and offered several important recommendations for further strengthening these services.
Drawing on her expertise as a developmental paediatrician, Dr Khanna emphasised the importance of a holistic approach to the development of children with special needs. She highlighted the need to strengthen institutional resources, ensure regular counselling for parents, and promote the effective use of modern assistive technologies to enhance children’s learning and development.
Model School Principal Amit Kumar Sharma assured the Commission that all recommendations and suggestions made during the inspection would be implemented in letter and spirit.
On the occasion, Dr SK Dhalwal, Clinical Psychologist; Dr Charu Yadav, Lady Medical Officer; and Manju, Vice Principal of NIEPVD, reaffirmed their commitment to promoting the physical and mental well-being of students while maintaining close coordination with parents to ensure comprehensive support.
Appreciating the institute’s efforts towards the welfare of children with disabilities, Dr Khanna stressed the need to provide a safe, inclusive, and child-friendly environment for every student. She said that ensuring access to quality education, rehabilitation services, and appropriate care for every child with special needs is a shared responsibility of all stakeholders.
