Dehradun, 7 Aug: The inaugural academic session of the Uttarakhand State Sports University at Gaulapar, Haldwani, is set to begin on 29 August 2026, coinciding with National Sports Day. Ahead of this, the cabinet meeting held today has approved the creation of 122 regular posts along with outsourced arrangements for technical and support staff to ensure smooth functioning of the university. Sports Minister Rekha Arya announced that the first session will be formally inaugurated with traditional rituals on 29 August.
The Dhami cabinet’s approval of new posts marks a decisive step towards operationalising the university. The sports minister expressed satisfaction over the cabinet decision, stating that recruitment will be carried out transparently through direct appointments. She added that an official notification will be issued shortly, paving the way for the institution to begin functioning with teachers, trainers and administrative staff. The establishment of the university will also open new avenues of employment for the youth of the state.
Until now, promising players from Uttarakhand were compelled to seek advanced training and facilities in other states, and many talents faded due to lack of guidance and infrastructure. With the sports university now becoming a reality, young athletes will have access to modern training, scientific approaches and international‑level facilities within the state itself. Rekha Arya described 29 August as a historic date for Uttarakhand, as it is celebrated nationwide as National Sports Day in honour of hockey legend Major Dhyan Chand. She said the university will give a new dimension to the sporting culture of the state, enabling athletes to shine on the global stage. For parents and youth alike, the most significant aspect is that education, training and employment opportunities linked to sports will now be available within Uttarakhand.
