Haridwar, 18 Aug: Continuous heavy rainfall from the hills to the plains since late last night has led to waterlogging in several parts of Haridwar city and a sharp rise in the Ganga’s water level. At Bhimgoda Barrage, the river was reportedly close to crossing the warning mark, flowing at 293.10 metres against the danger level of 294 metres. The officials confirmed that the Ganga has already breached the warning threshold and is inching close to the danger point.
The administration has been on alert since morning today, with the drainage work undertaken in affected localities and irrigation department officials keeping constant watch on the river’s level. Flood posts in low‑lying areas have been put on high alert. Additional water released from the hills due to incessant rain has further increased the inflow at Haridwar, causing a steady rise at Bhimgoda Barrage. The authorities have stated that, while the situation is presently under control, all the agencies have been directed to remain on full alert to tackle any eventuality.
Various localities in Haridwar including Bhagat Singh Chowk, Ranipur Mod, Kankhal and Latowali reported waterlogging, causing inconvenience to residents late last night and today. The municipal officials and the staff have been deployed to manage drainage.
District Magistrate Mayur Dixit has directed the officials to maintain close watch on the Ganga’s level and has also advised the residents in low‑lying areas to remain cautious. Flood posts have been instructed to stay vigilant, while disaster management, irrigation and police departments have been asked to remain prepared for emergencies.
In addition, the officials have appealed to the people not to venture near the riverbanks during the ongoing heavy rainfall, emphasising that the situation is being monitored continuously and updates are being shared with all the agencies concerned.
