Dehradun, 19 Aug: On the occasion of Raksha Bandhan, Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has announced a major concession for women in Uttarakhand. Women across the state will be able to travel free of cost in buses operated by the Uttarakhand Transport Corporation (UTC) on 28 and 29 August 2026. The state government has issued orders to UTC to ensure necessary arrangements for the implementation of this facility. According to the directive, women passengers will not be required to pay any fare during these two days.
It may be reminded, that Raksha Bandhan traditionally sees large numbers of women travelling to their parental homes and relatives, and the government’s initiative aims to provide them safe, convenient and free public transport. The move is intended to ease travel during the festival while also offering economic relief.
Additional Secretary Reena Joshi clarified that the expenditure incurred by the corporation in providing free travel would be reimbursed by the state government. The Transport Department has directed the corporation to take immediate action in line with the order.
