This day, 5th September 1976, two hearts became one and, today, we celebrate the Golden Anniversary of Harry Sethi and Nutan Sethi, a celebration of love, trust and togetherness.
Since I was a witness for a greater part, I can attempt to pen down my thoughts on this wonderful journey. My association with Harry and Nutan goes back to September 1983 when I joined the LBS National Academy of Administration, Mussoorie, as a Faculty where Harry was already in position. Their children and my son studied and grew up together in Mussoorie and later in Delhi. As the saying goes, the bond between families grows stronger when children are also good friends. So, the Sethis were an extended family for us and to know them is to know what true companionship means.
Their journey is a beautiful example of how two people can walk through life, sharing every joy and facing challenges with unwavering support for each other. What makes their bond so special is the perfect balance they share…Harry’s cheerful laughter and Nutan’s graceful strength. A successful marriage is not about two perfect people but about how imperfect people never stop choosing each other.
The Sethis have a wide circle of friends and friendship for them is not ephemeral but a long-lasting bond. They are gracious hosts and visitors have always felt welcomed at their home irrespective of the time of day. We have been a permanent fixture in their celebrations and enjoyed the hospitality frequently.
Harry’s conviction to repay society motivated him to set up a Toastmasters Club in Dehradun in August 2015 to equip the youngsters with communication and leadership skills. Acquiring these skills has helped many to find suitable placements or elevated them professionally in their chosen fields. The Toastmasters Club in Dehradun has been Harry’s hallmark which showed his passion, commitment, persuasiveness and untiring energy to achieve this objective. Nutan was also equally supportive in Harry’s efforts to realise his dream of a fully functional Toastmasters Club in Dehradun.
No doubt, age has taken its toll on them also but they have faced it with equanimity and grace. What they somewhat lacked in physical strength was more than made up by their positivity, cheerfulness and undiminishing passion for life. This unshakable belief has helped them to withstand many vicissitudes in life and come out stronger.
On this glorious occasion, we thank them for showing us that true love does exist and it grows stronger with time. Heartiest congratulations to you both. May your life continue to shine for many more decades to come!
