BJP set to win 10 out of 11 Municipal Corporations

DEHRADUN, 25 Jan: It is advantage BJP in the Municipal elections held in Uttarakhand though in many urban local bodies, the Congress candidates and the Independents have also done well by winning or are leading. As far as the election in 11 Municipal Corporations are concerned, BJP was stated to be leading in 10 of them while one was won by a rebel BJP candidate Arti Bhandari. Congress failed to perform well in any of the municipal corporations.
In Dehradun, BJP appeared set to retain power in Municipal Corporation with its mayoral candidate Saurabh Thapliyal having established a clear lead over his nearest rival, Virendra Pokhriyal of Congress. However, it has been rather mixed performance for the BJP as far as election for municipal corporators/councillors in Dehradun Nagar Nigam is concerned. Independents and some Congress candidates have also done well.
In Haridwar Corporation, BJP’s Kiran Jaisal was leading against her Congress rival Amresh Baliyan. In Almora Nagar Nigam, BJP’s Ajay Verma had set up a clear lead against Congress candidate Bhairav Goswami. In Pithoragarh, BJP candidate Kalpana Devlal somehow managed to defeat her nearest rival Monika Mahar who is a rebel Congress candidate and wife of Congress MLA Mayukh Mahar. Congress candidate Anju Lunthi, who had also contested as Congress candidate in an Assembly byelection from there, stood a distant third.
In In Mussoorie, BJP’s Meera Saklani has won the municipal chairperson election and has become the first ever woman chairperson from Mussoorie. In Srinagar(Pauri), the results should cause some worry for Cabinet minister who is MLA from here as the rebel BJP candidate Aarti Bhandari has won against the official BJP candidate Aasha here. In Muni Ki Reti too, the results should be cause of worry for Cabinet Minister Subodh Uniyal who holds considerable influence here. BJP candidate lost from here.
