Mother’s Day!

By Vimal Kapoor

On Sunday, the entire world celebrated ‘Mother’s Day’. There is an invisible common attribute that runs through each and every human being on this universe. This trait cuts through barriers of caste, creed and nations, it is common to every Amar, Akbar, Amarjeet and Anthony … what is it? It’s the unconditional love and affection for one’s mother. Whosoever is reading these lines, just close your eyes for a minute and remember your mother and you will feel warmth and tenderness flooding your soul! Maa is ‘janani’; she is the very reason why we came into existence … to experience this wonderful, fascinating world. The magnitude of a mother’s significance is so overwhelming that it seems gross that ‘Mother’s Day’ is celebrated only once a year. Every day should be Mother’s Day!

Moms are the greatest teachers in the world. She teaches us how to crawl, walk, and then run in a world that generally wants to pull us down. She teaches us how to stand on our own and how to face rough times with courage and strength of mind. I cannot think of a more thankless job, with long hours, no break and no pay. She is our best buddy. when any crisis heavy and sudden, falls upon us; when hardship takes the place of success; when friends who celebrate with us in our good times leave us; when dilemma thickens around us, she is the one who will still be on our side, and attempt by her kind suggestion to disperse the clouds of darkness, and cause peace and confidence to return to our soul.

As teenagers, when we swiftly savour a different side of this world, when hormones are raging inside us, we often think our moms are so out-of-tune with life. We start thinking that her outdated brand of wisdom is nonsensical and that we ourselves know it all. “Please chill’’ is our general rejoinder. However, after we retrospect our own realism we usually come back to realise that Mom was right, it’s a different story altogether that we generally do not confess this to her. She was right about needing to study and play hard, even though we wanted to spend the extra time with friends and she was right about the bad company and bunch of hooligans we should avoid, not to mention consume nourishing food at right time of the day.

Let’s make sure we tell our moms and the mothers of our children how special they are to us. Our cheerfulness, satisfaction and triumphs are what she relishes as her rewards. Thank you, Mom, for all the scolding, for lip-smacking ‘paranthas’ and ‘biryanis’ for uncompromising love, for indisputable caring suggestions, for secretly ordering cakes on our birthdays… and for a million other things. So, this Mother’s Day, I salute you, Mom. Thank you for being a beacon of light throughout our lifetime!
