Dehradun, 30 Dec: BJP’s State General Secretary Deepti Rawat Bhardwaj today strongly criticised the Congress for what she described as an unfortunate attempt to do politics over the Ankita Bhandari case by circulating unverified, objectionable and provocative content on Facebook, Instagram and other media platforms. She said Ankita Bhandari was a daughter of Devbhoomi Uttarakhand and repeatedly projecting her name as a subject of social media sensationalism amounted to an insult to the dignity of the departed soul.

Rawat alleged that the Congress has been left with no substantive issues to place before the people and is therefore resorting to misleading the public of Uttarakhand. She claimed that Congress leaders are fabricating fresh narratives of allegations on the basis of edited videos and rumours and termed this approach a social media trial rather than a genuine pursuit of justice. She asserted that if anyone has credible evidence related to the case, it should be presented before the court or an authorised investigating agency instead of being used to sensationalise the issue on social media for political mileage.

Referring to the actions taken by the state government, she said the Dhami government had responded swiftly and firmly in the tragic incident. Arrests in the case were made within 24 hours, recovery of the body was ensured within 48 hours, the constitution of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) and proceedings initiated under stringent legal provisions. Rawat further claimed that effective and strong representation before the court ensured life imprisonment for the guilty and added that every step taken by the government was carried out with due regard to the sentiments and inputs of the victim’s family.

The BJP leader appealed to the Congress not to vitiate the atmosphere of Uttarakhand by deploying unrestrained, obscene and unverified content as a political tool on media platforms. She also expressed hope that social media platforms, the administration and cyber agencies would take strict action against undignified content to uphold the decorum of public discourse.

Reiterating the BJP’s clear stand, Rawat said that any evidence related to the case must be placed before the court and urged the opposition to refrain from repeatedly dragging the dignity of the late daughter of Devbhoomi into the public domain for immediate political gains.
