Garhwal Post Bureau

Dehradun, 11 Jun: Agriculture and Horticulture Minister Ganesh Joshi inaugurated a two‑day international seminar and workshop on cinnamon at the Perfumery and Aromatic Research and Development Institute (previously known as Centre for Aromatic Plants), Selaqui, today. On the occasion he also released a souvenir of the workshop.

Addressing the gathering on this occasion, Joshi reminded that the ‘Mahak Kranti Policy 2026’ has been implemented to promote aromatic farming in the state. Under this, 23,000 hectares of land would be brought under aromatic cultivation. This would benefit 91,000 farmers, he added. Joshi also shared that a ‘Cinnamon Valley’ is being developed over about 5,200 hectares in Champawat and Nainital districts, and that this would create new opportunities for farmers and entrepreneurs. The agriculture minister added that, under the leadership of Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, the aroma and medicinal plant sector in Uttarakhand has gained a new dimension. Through government policies and schemes, the farmers are being linked with aromatic farming to increase their income and establish Uttarakhand as an aroma hub.

On this occasion, Joshi directed the departmental officers to coordinate with the Forest Department to involve more farmers in medicinal and aromatic plant cultivation in remote hill areas and forest land. He said that the Centre for Aromatic Plants (CAP) has given a new identity to aromatic farming in the state over the past two decades and this seminar will play a vital role in advancing cinnamon cultivation, research, processing and marketing.

Besides, this Ganesh Joshi also honoured national and international delegates participating in the seminar and also visited the stalls displaying products made from medicinal plants.

The seminar, themed ‘Cinnamon: Promotion, Sustainable Cultivation and Innovations in Post‑Harvest Technologies’, is being attended by experts, scientists, farmers and industry representatives from Sri Lanka, Indonesia and other countries.
