Committee to probe Balika Niketan inmate’s death

Dehradun, 16 May: Women Empowerment Minister Rekha Arya visited the Balika Niketan here, today, to obtain information about the death of an inmate who was accused of killing her mother.
Arya was of the opinion that the manner in which the girl was found in the bathroom, it could not be a case of suicide. A three-member committee had been constituted to look into the incident. It has been asked to submit a report within three days.
The teenaged girl, who was recently arrested for allegedly murdering her mother, was found dead at the rehabilitation centre. Vinita Chauhan was arrested last month by the Haridwar police on charges of murdering her mother in the Kankhal area of the district.
Chauhan was found lying unconscious in the bathroom of the girls’ rehabilitation centre on Wednesday night. She was rushed to the government Doon hospital where the doctors declared her dead.
Police said that the girl was depressed. Her father had refused to meet her despite several messages being sent, police said.
Usha Negi, Chairperson of the Uttarakhand State Commission for Protection of Child Rights, told the media that the girl was mentally disturbed after she lost her mother and was worried about her two siblings.
