Dehradun, 29 Jun: Dehradun police have arrested a youth, Jaspreet Singh, from Haryana. He is accused of spreading panic by threatening to blow up all police stations in Uttarakhand through posts on social media. The 26‑year‑old was traced and apprehended following intensive cyber analysis, technical surveillance and examination of electronic evidence. His mobile phone, used to circulate the threatening posts, has been seized and is undergoing forensic scrutiny along with other digital material.
It may be recalled that, on 21 June, an unidentified person had widely circulated posts across multiple social media platforms threatening bomb explosions in several police stations of Uttarakhand. This had created fear and alarm among the public and raised concerns about security and public peace. In view of the seriousness of the matter, a case was registered at Kotwali Nagar, Dehradun, under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Information Technology Act (IT Act).
However, on 23 June, fresh posts repeating the threat again went viral, intensifying the public anxiety. Thereafter, a special police team was constituted on the directions of SSP Dehradun Pramendra Dobal to be led by the Inspector‑in‑Charge, Kotwali Nagar. The team carried out detailed cyber analysis, tracked digital footprints and examined electronic evidence to identify the accused. Based on technical monitoring, Jaspreet Singh was arrested yesterday from the Kotwali Nagar area, though earlier reports had indicated his presence in Ambala, Haryana.
During his interrogation, the accused admitted that he was angered by police action following a dispute between local youths and Nihang Sikhs in Karnaprayag, Chamoli district. After watching related videos on social media, he sought to spread fear and challenge Uttarakhand Police by posting on his Instagram account ‘Jaspreet‑devil’ on 25 June that bomb blasts would take place in all police stations of the state.
Police have confirmed recovery of the mobile phone used for posting the threats and have initiated forensic examination of the device and other digital evidence. The officials also observed that such threatening or misleading posts are serious offences and warned that strict legal action will be taken against those misusing social media to spread terror.
SP City Pramod Kumar Singh said that the arrest has neutralised a grave threat to public safety and reinforced confidence in the police’s ability to respond swiftly to cyber‑related crimes. Dehradun Police have appealed to the citizens to use social media responsibly and avoid posting content that could create panic or disturb public order.
