DEHRADUN, 28 Dec: State Election Commissioner Sushil Kumar paid a courtesy visit to Governor Lt Gen Gurmit Singh (Retd) at Raj Bhawan on Saturday and provided an update on the arrangements for the General Municipal Elections 2024. The Commissioner informed that the State Election Commission had issued a notification on December 24, 2024. The programme for the general elections to 11 municipal corporations, 43 municipal councils, and 46 nagar panchayats in the state has been finalised. Voting will take place on January 23, 2025, and the counting of votes will be completed on January 25, 2025.
The Commissioner mentioned that this time around, the election process will prioritise digitisation. All voter lists have been displayed on the official website of the commission, making it easier for the public to access information. For the first time, some municipal corporations will have women-centric polling booths called “Pink booths,” which will be manned by women. Additionally, for the first time, the election results will be directly displayed on the commission’s website, accessible to the public.
Lt Gen Singh appreciated the commission’s efforts in ensuring fair and transparent elections through digitisation. He stated that measures like digitisation of voter lists and the online display of counting results will strengthen accountability, and credibility in the electoral process. The Governor also suggested better documentation of the election process and recommended recognising and rewarding personnel who excel in election duties.
