Experts urged to save traditional farming

5-day International Conference at Graphic Era

Dehradun, 25 Nov: Experts at the five-day International Conference underway in Graphic Era said that the rapid development occurring in the Himalayan region are depleting natural resources obtained from forests. These resources are crucial for agriculture.

Experts shared this information at the international conference organised at Graphic Era Institute of Medical Sciences today. This conference is being held on the subject, ‘Innovative Sustainable Agriculture and Livestock Technologies’.

Chief Guest, Director of GB Pant National Institute of Himalayan Environment, Dr Sunil Nautiyal in his address, today, said that the ecosystem of Himalayan region is fragile, diverse and unique. Climate change is destroying the flora and fauna of this region. He said that the communities living in the Himalayas have been practicing traditional farming methods for generations. These traditional methods are gradually disappearing. Dr Nautiyal urged the students to preserve these traditional methods with the help of new technologies and research work.

Guest of honour, Director of Uttarakhand Council for Biotechnology, Dr Sanjay Kumar said that the food produced from current agricultural land is not sufficient for fulfilling the demand of the increasing population of the country. He said that the lack of nutrients in the soil is a significant issue to be addressed. He emphasised on the need for developing better strategies using new technologies for solving these issues.

Vice Chancellor, Graphic Era Hill University, Dr Sanjay Jasola said that technology is becoming an integral part of human life. These technologies should be used in vital sectors like agriculture and livestock. He said that students should move forward while learning new technologies, skills and innovation.

Founder Chairman of Society for Plant Research Dr SK Bhatnagar advised students to focus on quality rather than quantity of research papers.

On the first day of this 5- day international conference, today, a Souvenir and Abstract book was launched. On this occasion, an MoU was signed between Graphic Era Hill University and Uttarakhand Council for Biotechnology. Vice Chancellor Dr. Sanjay Jasola was honoured with the Distinguished Leadership Award. This award was presented to him by Dr SK Bhatnagar on behalf of Society for Plant Research.

The International Conference is being organised by School of Agriculture in collaboration with European Bioinformatics Institute, Cambridgeshire, UK. Convener and Dean of School of Agriculture Dr MK Nautiyal proposed the vote of thanks. HoD Dr Arvind Singh Negi, Dr Balwant Rawat, Jorge Batista da Rocha and Louisse Paola Mirabueno from European Bioinformatics Institute, along with scientists, researchers, faculty members and students were present at the conference. Dr Pallavi Joshi hosted the conference.
