Film on renowned artist BC Sanyal screened at Doon Library

Dehradun, 12 Dec: The Doon Library and Research Center organised the screening of a documentary film on the life and works of renowned artist BC Sanyal this evening. The 51-minute film was well-received by the audience.

“The idea behind making a film on BC Sanyal was to showcase his contributions as a prominent artist, whose work has connected the past to the present,” said Parth Chatterjee.

Prior to the screening, the film’s scriptwriter and director Parth Chatterjee highlighted BC Sanyal’s significant contributions to the field of art. He mentioned that this 16mm Eastmancolor documentary film was commissioned by Lalit Kala Akademi, New Delhi, in 1987 and completed in 1988.

Notably, Sanyal played a pivotal role in modern Indian art, pre-independence. His paintings exemplify humanist values, compassion, empathy, and sensitivity.

The film showcases Sanyal’s work as a painter, sculptor, and draftsman, demonstrating his versatility. The music selection, compiled by Parth Chatterjee, features archival recordings from renowned artists.

The film showcases Sanyal’s contributions to modern Indian art, highlighting his humanist approach and sensitivity. The film competed in the 1990 Bombay International Film Festival.

BC Sanyal was born on 22 April 1901 in Dibrugarh, Assam. Sanyal was a prominent figure in modern Indian art. He taught at the Mayo School of Art and Craft in Lahore (1929-1936) and established the Lahore School of Fine Arts.

Sanyal was primarily a landscape painter and skilled sculptor. He loved life and had compassion and empathy for people. He remained creative throughout his life.

The film has been directed and scripted by Parth Chatterjee. The Production and Editing has been done by Samira Jain, the Cinematography by Anoop Jotwani and Sound Design by MA Mathew.

The programme was attended by art enthusiasts, writers, journalists, and library patrons, including Sundar Singh Bisht. Programme Associate Chandrashekhar Tewari and Programme Advisor Nicholas welcomed the guests. The audience also engaged in a Q&A session.
