Dehradun, 2 Dec: Governor Lt General Gurmit Singh (Retd) extended heartfelt congratulations and best wishes to the people of Nagaland and Assam on their Statehood Day, on behalf of Uttarakhand.
During a programme held at the Raj Bhawan, the Governor interacted with students from Nagaland and Assam who are studying in Uttarakhand. The students also staged cultural programmes showcasing their heritage. The Governor felicitated all the students with gifts.
While addressing the gathering, the Governor emphasised that India is a unique nation, rich in diversity, woven together by multiple languages, cultures, and religions. He urged the citizens to celebrate the unity in diversity that defines India. He expressed his hope for increased cultural engagement between all states to strengthen relationships among Indians, in line with the vision of “One India, Great India”.
The Governor stressed the importance of cultural exchange and mutual understanding among the states, stating that it strengthens relationships and fosters trust, which is the foundation of India’s strength. He expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for initiating the unique practice of celebrating the Statehood Days of all states in every Raj Bhawan.
The Governor praised Nagaland for its distinct identity and cultural diversity, highlighting the unique traditions, languages, costumes, folk arts, dances, and festivals, which are celebrated not only across India but internationally. He mentioned Nagaland’s renowned “Hornbill Festival”, which is celebrated globally, and noted that the state is progressing while preserving its rich cultural heritage.
He pointed out the natural beauty and historical significance of both Uttarakhand and Nagaland. While Uttarakhand is famous for its scenic mountains, temples, and religious heritage, Nagaland is dedicated to its lush forests, greenery, and cultural legacy. Both states serve as symbols of diversity, with their people taking immense pride in their tribal, cultural, and historical roots. The Governor also referenced Nagaland as the “Switzerland of the East” due to its rich flora and fauna, and honoured the memory of Rani Gaidinliu, known as the “Rani of Nagaland”, for her bravery in the freedom struggle, proving that Indian women are equally capable in every field.
The Governor also extended his greetings to the citizens of Assam on their Statehood Day, emphasising that this day is an opportunity to celebrate Assam’s rich culture, diversity, natural beauty, and glorious history. Assam, with its spiritual significance, including the Kamakhya Temple and the sacred Brahmaputra River, attracts millions of devotees.
He remarked that the connection between Assam and Uttarakhand is further strengthened by the shared beauty of nature and culture. Just as Uttarakhand’s valleys are unique, Assam’s tea gardens, the Brahmaputra River, and its lush forests are equally captivating. Both states are committed to environmental conservation. Assam’s diverse tribal communities enrich the state with their traditions, music, and art, while its wildlife sanctuaries like Kaziranga and Manas National Parks, along with adventure sports on the Brahmaputra, are world-renowned.
The Governor wished the citizens of Nagaland and Assam success in preserving their cultural identity and natural beauty while advancing new developmental milestones. He assured them that everyone would always remain committed to contributing to national unity and development, working together to uphold the unity, integrity, and prosperity of the country.
