Dehradun, 12 Oct: The Sustainability Cluster at School of Engineering, UPES, has organised its ‘Sustainability Fair 2022’ which will run from 11 to 14 October. The underlying theme of the four-day event is ‘Safe, Resilient, and Sustainable Cities & Communities’.
The Chief Guest at the inaugural session, today, was Governor Lt General Gurmit Singh (Retd). The welcome note was shared by Dr Sunil Rai, Vice Chancellor, UPES, followed by the unveiling of the Sustainability Report and Sustainability Fair Proceedings by the Chief Guest and the UPES academic team present including Dr SJ Chopra, Chancellor, Dr Ram Sharma, Pro-Vice Chancellor, Manish Madaan, Registrar, Dr Gurvinder Virk, Dean, School of Engineering, and the faculty of the sustainability cluster.
Dr Sunil Rai said, “The fair aims to display cutting-edge research on sustainability and related challenges of high societal importance. The objective is to promote cost-effective and sustainable solutions,organize brainstorming sessions on sustainable solutions through the industry-academia conclave, establish networking among various stakeholders and plan collaborative actions.” Dr Rai added, “At UPES, we have already taken steps towards sustainability by working on Hydrogen storage, Li-Ion Batteries, Biofuels, water management, water purification, renewable energy, contributing towards sustainable cities and communities through the smart model villages of Uttarakhand and many other initiatives, and we want to be the conversation drivers of this important subject.”
Governor Gurmit Singh applauded UPES for its remarkable contributions in the field of higher education and said, “People need to be sensitised about pertinent matters on conservation of the environment. I am sure such events shall serve as an enabler for different thought processes to come together and work towards a common goal of achieving sustainable economic growth, social development and environmental sustainability.” He also shared statistics on the various central and state-run sustainable projects like Jal Jeevan Mission, Ujjwala Yojana, Ujala Programme and the progress made by India in achieving its sustainability goals.
The four-day summit will provide hands-on training, interactive sessions with renowned dignitaries in the field, sustainability model competitions for school and college students, exhibitions by sustainability practitioners, panel discussions, international symposiums and networking-sessions.
The participants include regional industries, research institutions, academia, government bodies, NGOs, and students from various parts of the world including Spain, Denmark, Srilanka, Indonesia. The institute will host exhibitions by regional industries and organisations working on sustainable urban planning and industrial activities, green building materials, pollution, green energy, waste management and biorefinery, air pollution, and climate change.
