Dehradun, 22 Apr: Governor Lt General Gurmit Singh (Retd) was presented a research-based book by Professor Dinesh Chandra Shastri, Vice Chancellor of Uttarakhand Sanskrit University, under the initiative ‘One University – One Research’, here, today.
Professor Shastri informed the Governor that the university has conducted research on the topic, “Revival of Culture and Indian Knowledge Systems: In the Context of Uttarakhand”. The research mainly aims to distinguish between pilgrimage (Teerth Yatra) and tourism, emphasising the preservation of the sanctity of holy pilgrimage sites. Based on scriptures, a Code of Conduct for pilgrims has been prepared. He highlighted that the lack of awareness regarding this distinction has led to the erosion of the purity of sacred sites, causing environmental, social, and natural concerns. A QR code has also been included in the book, which links to a YouTube video explaining the code of conduct using modern technology.
Professor Shastri stressed that a code of conduct for pilgrims is essential to uphold the dignity of pilgrimage sites. According to scriptures, faith and restraint hold great significance during pilgrimages. Pilgrims are advised to control their mind and senses, focus on their Deity, and seek the company of sages and spiritual teachers. Walking is regarded as the highest form of penance during such journeys, while practices like self-study, austerity, daily prayers, and yajna (ritual offerings) are considered integral parts of the pilgrimage. Maintaining moderation in food and lifestyle, being content and self-reliant, speaking the truth, and practicing kindness, non-violence, and respect toward all beings are also emphasised.
The research also outlines practices to be avoided during pilgrimages. As per scriptures, consumption of meat, alcohol, or any intoxicants is strictly prohibited. Activities such as accepting donations, practicing untouchability, wearing inappropriate attire, washing clothes or swimming across sacred rivers are considered improper.
The Governor appreciated the university’s research efforts, stating that this initiative would not only help promote and preserve the ancient knowledge systems and culture but also assist in maintaining the sanctity of pilgrimage sites and enhancing environmental balance. He urged that the message of this pilgrimage code of conduct should reach as many people as possible.
