Harak Singh stirs hornet’s nest by claiming attempt to topple Tiwari Govt

By Arun Pratap Singh

DEHRADUN, 4 Dec: Forest & Environment Minister Harak Singh Rawat stirred a political hornet’s nest by claiming that, after being accused in the Jenny Sex Scandal, he had managed to secure the support of 28 MLAs with the backing of the BJP leadership to overthrow the Tiwari Government. Rawat claimed this on the floor of the House while paying tribute to the late Tiwari.
Rawat claimed that he had already spoken with Pramod Mahajan in this regard and also with then Congress leader Vijay Bahuguna who had been promised a Rajya Sabha seat by some BJP leaders for his support to possible formation of a BJP led coalition government in Uttarakhand. Rawat added that despite having come to know of this ‘conspiracy’, Tiwari remained quiet and well behaved with the rebellious MLAs. Not only this, Bahuguna, too, on his part played a good role in saving the government. Bahuguna also took him to Tiwari where all the misunderstanding was cleared and the ‘coup’ attempt was given up.
Rawat’s claim has the potential to snowball and become a major political issue in the coming days in Uttarakhand politics. It remains to be seen how the BJP, which is currently his party, also reacts to such a claim! However, Congress is likely to grab this issue and make it a national issue by claiming that BJP attempted to gain power through such an act.
