Dehradun, 23 Jan: Following the directives of Chairman of the National Minorities Commission, Iqbal Singh Lalpura, the state government has directed the home department to ensure arrangements are made to display labels outside the restaurants about the category of meat served – whether it is Jhatka or Halal. Lalpura has written to all the states in this respect.

Following this directive, Principal Secretary L Fanai has written an official letter to Additional Chief Secretary, Home, to issue directions to restaurants of Uttarakhand in this regard. They would need to display labels like “Jhatka Meat served here” or “Halal Meat served here”.

Lalpura has reminded that a large number of Sikhs and Hindus in India do not consume Halal meat and, therefore, the absence of labelling would be an infringement of their rights. The home department has been further asked to inform the National Minorities Commission about the implementation of the orders directly.
