Dehradun, 27 Nov: The Centre has enacted a strict law declaring Triple Talaq under Biddat as illegal but the cases of instant divorces in the Muslim community continue to emerge. A fresh incident has been reported from Dehradun where a husband allegedly divorced his wife over the phone by pronouncing Talaq, Talaq, Talaq. He is also accused of selling his house clandestinely and then absconding since.
Acting on the complaint filed by the victim, the police have registered a case against three people at Patel Nagar Kotwali and are investigating the matter.
A newly married woman, a resident of Naya Nagar, Mehuwala, has lodged a complaint at Patel Nagar Police Station, stating that she was married to a youth from Naya Nagar on 10 May according to Islamic customs. Although her husband’s behaviour was initially normal, he began quarrelling with her shortly after the wedding. The husband is accused of routinely physically assaulting the victim and harassing her daily over dowry. The victim further alleged that he tortured her to bring a Scorpio car, despite her family having already provided a bike and gold jewellery in dowry as per their means. The husband has reportedly sold the jewellery and the bike received as dowry. The victim’s marriage was reportedly arranged by a person residing near Madina Masjid, Majra, in Dehradun. On 2 November, the husband allegedly assaulted the victim and dropped her at her sister’s house. Following this, he pronounced “Talaq, Talaq, Talaq” three times over the phone. The victim alleged that her husband also pressured her to have physical relations with his brother-in-law and friends but when she resisted, she was beaten. Furthermore, the husband is accused of selling the marital home to an acquaintance, leaving the victim without a place to live.
SSP, Dehradun, Ajai Singh has confirmed that based on the victim’s complaint, a case has been registered at Kotwali Patel Nagar against her husband and two other persons. The victim has reported that the accused has sold the house and is currently absconding. Police teams are engaged in the search for the accused and are investigating the case.
