Dehradun, 9 Jun: The recent killing of 18-year-old Ketan Lal in Tehri Garhwal has shocked Uttarakhand and reignited debate about caste discrimination and violence against young people exercising their right to choose relationships. According to police, Ketan, a Dalit youth, was allegedly beaten to death after being lured to a village where he had been in contact with an upper-caste girl. Police have registered a murder case along with provisions of the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.

Notable Cases from Uttarakhand
1. Tehri Garhwal (2026)
Ketan Lal, an 18-year-old Dalit youth, was allegedly beaten to death and his friend seriously injured because of his friendship with a girl from an upper-caste family. The incident triggered protests and demands for strict action.

2. Pauri Garhwal Interfaith Couple Case (2025)
An interfaith doctor couple approached the Uttarakhand High Court after receiving threats and facing obstacles in registering their marriage under the Special Marriage Act. The High Court directed authorities to ensure their protection.

3. Other Unreported and Underreported Cases
Social activists in Uttarakhand have long argued that many cases involving threats, forced separation of couples, social boycott, and violence over inter-caste or inter-community relationships often remain unreported or are recorded under different criminal categories rather than as honour crimes. While Uttarakhand reports fewer honour killings than states such as Haryana, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu, caste and community pressures continue to influence marriage choices in many areas.

National Perspective
Honour crimes continue to occur across India, particularly where caste identity, family prestige, and patriarchal norms are deeply entrenched. Recent reported cases include:
*Madhubani, Bihar: A man was allegedly murdered over his son’s inter-caste marriage.
*Jaipur, Rajasthan: A young man was allegedly killed over an inter-caste love marriage.
*Telangana: A pregnant woman was allegedly murdered due to opposition to her inter-caste marriage.

The Challenge before Society
India’s Constitution guarantees equality and the freedom to choose one’s partner. Yet caste prejudice, social pressure, and concerns about “family honour” continue to endanger lives. Every such incident is not only a criminal act but also a challenge to constitutional values, social justice, and human dignity.
Uttarakhand, known for its literacy, military traditions, and progressive outlook, must ensure that young people are protected from violence based on caste, community, or personal choice. A truly modern society is one where individuals can live, love, and marry without fear.
No caste, community, or notion of honour can be greater than a human life.
