Dehradun, 8 Sep: The Doon Library & Research Centre collaborated with ‘Room to Read’ to host a magical reading event at the Children’s Section. Anubha – The Storyteller wowed the 22 children who were present with her enchanting tales. As a delightful conclusion, the children were gifted goody bags containing stationery, drawing books, that painted joyous smiles across their faces.
There were 22 children from 13 schools, including The Upper Primary School, Parade Ground, St Thomas’ College, St Joseph’s Academy, Convent of Jesus and Mary, Hill Grange Preparatory School, Primary School, Parade Ground, Government Primary School, Raipur, and other schools of Dehradun.
The Reading Session started with Anubha taking the children on a wild ride through tales of Monsters. Children eagerly responded by describing how the monster looks, what he eats, what kind of friends he has, what makes him sad and, most importantly, what makes him happy. The session ended with a visualisation of monsters that we are afraid of and then painting them on paper. Children came up with interesting answers like they were afraid of subjects like Math and Physics, some said their monsters are ‘bhindi’ and ‘karela’. Mantavya said her monster was Trigonometry and she named her monster SIN + COS! The children received lots of Goody Bags afterwards to take back home and share with their brothers and sisters. It was a fun-filled event at the Children’s Section of the Doon Library.
The Doon Library & Research Centre (DLRC) has recently opened its doors to a delightful Children’s Section and Reading Room, designed exclusively for young minds. This vibrant space offers a diverse collection of books in different languages including Hindi, English, Kumaoni, Garhwali, Gurjari, Jaunsari, and other regional dialects. Many of these local language books have been donated by Room to Read.
The children’s section boasts of a dedicated local language wherein there are many books written by authors and poets belonging to Uttarakhand like Sumitra Nandan Pant, Ruskin Bond, Nayantara Sehgal, Dr Nand Kishor Hatwal and many more such homegrown writers. The children’s section is a new and welcome addition to the DLRC library. It was a long cherished vision of the founders to open a public children’s library for the Children of Dehradun. This dream has been fulfilled as many children have started visiting the library to borrow books and attend the children-centric events that happen 3-4 times a month. The Children’s Section hosts engaging events ranging from storytelling sessions by local authors to music sessions by Uttarakhand folk artists, nature walks, film screenings, language learning workshops, and quizzes. This Reading Session with Anubha- The Storyteller in collaboration with Room to Read Dehradun, will introduce children to magic of reading books, a pleasure and a leisure that is fast exiting this big wide world of ours.
