Haridwar, 15 Jun: On the occasion of World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, today, MK Raina, President of the All India Senior Citizens’ Confederation (AISCCON), made an open appeal to Prime Minister Narendra Modi seeking immediate restoration of railway fare concessions for senior citizens.

In his letter, Raina wrote that elder abuse is not limited to physical or mental harassment. Neglecting the real needs and hardships of senior citizens is also a form of abuse.

He highlighted that most senior citizens in the country do not receive any pension and depend on limited savings, family support, or meagre income. For them, rail travel is not a luxury but an essential means for medical needs, family responsibilities, social connections, and a dignified life.

“Our senior citizens laid the foundation of today’s developed India. As farmers, soldiers, teachers, workers, entrepreneurs, homemakers, and taxpayers, they dedicated their lives to nation building. Today they do not expect charity, but respect and sensitivity for their contribution,” Raina said.

He added that the continued suspension of the railway concession is being felt by many seniors as a decline in the respect accorded to them.

Urging the Prime Minister to act, Raina stated, “On World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, I humbly request that the railway fare concession for senior citizens be restored at the earliest. This decision will not only provide financial relief but will also send a strong message of the nation’s gratitude and respect toward crores of elderly citizens.”

Raina expressed confidence that under the Prime Minister’s sensitive leadership, a positive decision would be taken on this long pending issue.
