Nainital HC Chief Justice Guhanathan Narendar retires today

Dehradun/Nainital, 8 Jan: Chief Justice of the Uttarakhand High Court, Guhanathan Narendar, is set to retire from his post tomorrow. According to an official notice issued by Registrar General Yogesh Kumar Gupta, a farewell ceremony will be organised in honour of the outgoing Chief Justice, for which all necessary administrative preparations have been finalised. Justice Manoj Kumar Gupta, presently posted at Allahabad High Court, has been appointed as the next Chief Justice of the Uttarakhand High Court.

To accord a respectful farewell to Chief Justice G Narendar, a ‘Full Court Farewell Reference’ will be held tomorrow at 3:30 p.m. in the Chief Justice’s courtroom. The event will be attended by all the judges of the High Court, the office bearers of the Bar Council and Bar Association and the senior advocates, who will gather to commemorate the tenure and contributions of Justice G Narendar.

The Nainital High Court administration has dispatched information regarding this farewell ceremony to the Advocate General, the President of the Bar Association, all the District Judges, and the high-ranking officials of the departments concerned. The notice further includes instructions to ensure robust security arrangements, protocol, and other essential logistics.

Ahead of his retirement, the Chief Justice also visited the High Court Bar Association auditorium today. Bar Association President DCS Rawat and General Secretary Saurabh Adhikari had appealed to all advocates to be present to honour the Chief Justice in today’s function.

According to the official profile provided by the Uttarakhand High Court, Chief Justice Guhanathan Narendar was born on 10 January 1964. Throughout his career, he has dealt with diverse cases involving Constitutional, Civil, Taxation (Customs), Mining Law, Environment and Forest matters and Arbitration cases. He was appointed as an Additional Judge of the Karnataka High Court on 2 January 2015 and became a Permanent Judge on 30 December 2017. He was later transferred to the High Court of Andhra Pradesh, where he assumed charge on 30 October 2023. He eventually took oath as the Chief Justice of the Uttarakhand High Court on 26 December 2024 and will demit office tomorrow on his retirement.

In a significant development, the Supreme Court Collegium on 18 December 2025 recommended the promotion of five judges as Chief Justices of various High Courts across the country. The decision was taken during a meeting led by Chief Justice Surya Kant. The Collegium recommended Justice Manoj Kumar Gupta of the Allahabad High Court to succeed the current Chief Justice of the Uttarakhand High Court following his retirement on 9 January 2026.
