HARIDWAR, 5 Dec: Navigation in surgery is an important example of today’s technological capabilities being applied to medicine and is now being launched in Uttarakhand by Max Super Speciality Hospital, Dehradun. It is for the first time this technology is being introduced in the state and neighbouring areas.
Dr Anand Mohan Thakur- Senior Consultant, Department of Neurosciences, told media, today, that Navigation in surgery was born from the desire to perform safer and less invasive procedures.
Computer Assisted Neuro Navigation is a revolutionary technique in both, neuro and spine surgeries and is all set to change the traditional surgery.
The way GPS satellites pinpoint the location of the smart phones, neuro navigation system lead the surgeon to the precise area where the surgery is needed.
Computer neuro navigation is an electronic machine to navigate or direct the surgeons to the exact point in brain and spine where the surgery has to be performed. The computer processes the scans (CT/ MRI) done before surgery and creates the scan to give a three dimensional view of the brain and spine along with the tumor and its placement, so that the exact location and extent of the tumor can be made with utmost precision beforehand.
He added, “In India, a vast majority of people have always been fearful and doubtful when it comes to spine and neuro surgeries as it involves high risk and complications. Results are very largely favourable, but neurological or spinal damage may leave major impacts, some of which can be life-threatening. Thus, it helps the doctor by reducing the damage to surrounding structures of brain and spine ensuring optimal removal of tumors and cancers.”
Most of spine and neuro surgeries were traditionally done as ‘open surgery’, where a portion of the skull was removed or the spine was opened with long incisions. However with the advent of Neuro Navigation, the accidental damage and the possible consequences (like memory loss, speech or motor difficulties, personality change and various intellectual deficiencies) can be avoided.
Dr Rahul Prashad, Medical Superintendent, Max Hospital, disclosed, “People from all the cities and neighbouring states can avail themselves of the facilities available at lower cost. Max Dehradun is the only Hospital in Uttarakhand and Western UP to have this advanced technology.”
